In 1994 the Craft & Hobby Association declared that March would be known as Craft Month – a magical time of the year to celebrate making things and encouraging people to rediscover the art of crafting and all of its’ many benefits.
So why crafting?
It’s good for your brain. Research has shown that those who frequently participate in crafting activities like knitting and sewing report leaving the activities feeling “very happy”. The level of meditation and mindfulness is likened to what you typically find in yoga.
Crafting encourages team building and bonding. Working on a solo project within a group setting or working on team project increases social connections. While working with our hands, we are free to speak to and create a face-to-face bond with those in the group. It also gets us to step away from our screens and our phones.
Crafting is also a great way to develop your problem solving skills. Sometimes the most creative pieces are made from solving problems. Don’t have a certain material? What other material can you use instead? Accidentally messed up that one part? Don’t scrap it – figure out how to fix it! (Glitter fixes everything. Just saying.)
Perhaps the greatest reason of all is the sense of personal accomplishment that comes from creating something with your hands. Whether you keep it for yourself or give it to a friend, you know that you invested your time into creating a unique craft that carries a piece of you with it!
Ready to get crafty but don't know where to start? Take a class with us and choose from a variety of projects! Follow along with us this month on Instagram at @crownedsparrowco.
